Can You Hunt Pheasants in Iowa Before October?

If you are planning an Iowa pheasant hunting trip, you may wonder, can you hunt pheasants in Iowa before October? For regular rooster pheasant hunting, the answer is no. Iowa’s regular pheasant season does not open in September or the first part of October.

For the 2026–27 season, Iowa’s regular rooster pheasant season begins October 31, 2026, and runs through January 10, 2027. Iowa also has a special resident youth pheasant hunt on October 24–25, before the regular season opens.

If you want to understand the complete season calendar, see our Iowa pheasant season dates guide.

When Does Iowa Pheasant Hunting Open?

The regular Iowa rooster pheasant season follows a set rule. The open season begins on the last Saturday in October and continues through January 10 of the following year.

For the current 2026–27 season, that means:

  • Regular season opens: October 31, 2026
  • Regular season closes: January 10, 2027
  • Shooting hours: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Daily limit: 3 roosters
  • Possession limit: 12 roosters

This means hunters cannot simply begin regular pheasant hunting when another October hunting season opens. Pheasant has its own season dates.

Can You Hunt Pheasants in September in Iowa?

No. Regular rooster pheasant hunting is not open in September.

Iowa has several hunting seasons that begin in September. For example, cottontail rabbit and fox and gray squirrel seasons begin September 5, while the statewide dove season begins September 1. These dates apply to those specific species and do not open the pheasant season.

This is important because Iowa has different opening dates for different types of game. Always check the season for the species you plan to hunt rather than assuming that one open season applies to another species.

What About Pheasant Hunting in Early October?

Early October is also before the regular Iowa pheasant season.

For the 2026–27 season, regular rooster pheasant hunting does not begin until October 31. So October 1 through October 23 is outside the regular pheasant season. October 26 through October 30 is also before the regular opening day.

There is one important exception: Iowa has a special resident youth pheasant hunt on October 24–25.

What Is the Youth Pheasant Hunt Before the Regular Season?

Iowa provides a special two-day pheasant hunt for resident youth before the regular season begins.

For 2026, the youth pheasant hunt is scheduled for October 24–25. Youth hunters must be 15 years old or younger and must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years old. Only the youth hunter may shoot pheasants during this special hunt.

The youth hunt has its own limits. The daily limit is one cock pheasant, with a possession limit of two after the first day. The youth hunter does not need a hunting license or stamps, while the accompanying adult must have the required license and habitat stamp when applicable.

This special youth opportunity should not be confused with the opening of the regular Iowa pheasant season.

Why Can't You Hunt Pheasants During Other September Seasons?

Iowa hunting seasons are species-specific.

For example, Iowa’s 2026–27 calendar includes September seasons for rabbits, squirrels and doves. Those seasons do not give hunters permission to take pheasants.

The same applies to other early October hunting seasons. A hunter must follow the specific season dates, shooting hours, bag limits and other rules for the species being hunted.

If your goal is pheasant hunting, wait until the applicable pheasant season has opened.

What Can You Do Before Iowa Pheasant Season Opens?

Even though you cannot hunt regular rooster pheasants before the season opens, September and early October can be useful preparation months.

You can use this time to:

  • Plan your Iowa pheasant hunting trip.
  • Confirm where you will hunt.
  • Check current Iowa hunting requirements.
  • Prepare your shotgun and other equipment.
  • Practice firearm safety.
  • Prepare hunting clothing and blaze orange.
  • Get your hunting dog ready if you use one.
  • Review the current pheasant regulations.
  • Contact a private hunting preserve about available dates.
  • Plan transportation, lodging and other trip details.

Preparing early can make your opening-day trip much easier.

When Should You Start Preparing for Iowa Pheasant Season?

September is a good time to start preparing for an Iowa pheasant hunting trip. You can research hunting areas, equipment, dogs and available hunting opportunities without waiting until the last few days before opening day.

As October approaches, confirm the current season dates and make sure your hunting plans follow Iowa’s current rules.

For the 2026–27 season, regular rooster pheasant hunting begins October 31. Iowa DNR recommends checking the official hunting regulations for the current legal requirements and season information.
